When was the last time you gazed up at the stars? Remember how relaxing and fun it was to explore the last frontier? Avoid the winter evening chill and lie back indoors at the state of the art Clever Planetarium at San Joaquin Delta College. Every month the Clever Planetarium offers public shows that explore different astronomical wonders. January's public show is being hosted tonight and tomorrow night, January 27th and 28th. This month's show, “Astronauts and the Mayan Calendar” offers two unique experiences. First, glimpse an inside view of what the human body faces as astronauts explore outer space and then transport yourself back in time to the stars of the ancient Mayan culture which were incorporated into the Mayan calendar, as well as their legends. Learn how the Mayan calendar was created and why this year is significant. Both shows start at 7:30 pm. Cost is $8.00 for adults and $6.00 for children, students, and seniors.

Or, if you want to enjoy the clear winter skies outside, Friday public shows at the Clever Planetarium coincide with the Stockton Astronomical Society's “Sky Tours." Tonight, January 27th, the Stockton Astronomical Society will set up telescopes for “Sky Tours” in the Shima 2 parking lot and it's free.

As the third oldest, continuously performing orchestra in California, the Stockton Symphony has been entertaining Stockton since 1926 when Manlio Silva conducted his inaugural concert. Today, the Stockton Symphony is going strong with a proud schedule of concerts conducted by Maestro Peter Jaffe and a deep presence in the community through projects like Harmony Stockton.

In continuing our tour of some of the beautiful architecture in Stockton, today we focus on the first Roman Catholic church in San Joaquin Valley, Saint Mary’s Church. Built on land first donated by Captain Charles Weber, Saint Mary’s Church is an example of a brick Gothic design. The first cornerstone was dedicated in 1861 with the Gothic spire added in 1893. Saint Mary’s Church is a gorgeous example of Stockton’s rich architectural and religious history as well as the home of a thriving parish today.

And thanks to our location, we have some truly wonderful farmer's markets that allow us to bring this agricultural bounty straight to our own kitchens from the growers themselves. In Stockton there are several markets that are open throughout the year that offer a vast array of fruits, vegetables, organic eggs, cut flowers, baked goods, and much more. There's nothing like waking up early to go to a local farmer's market and taking in the beauty of our local agriculture. What's your favorite item to pick up at a farmer's market?

It’s impossible to miss the beautiful architecture in town, and there’s no better place to start than St. John’s Episcopal Church. As the third oldest Episcopal Church on the west coast founded in 1850, the Nordic-style guild hall (on the right) was built in 1889 and the adjacent Norman-style church was built in 1892. Today, both buildings of St John's Episcopal Church are designated Stockton historical landmarks and the church is home to an annual orchestra festival (Jan 22nd-29th!). Fun fact: The stained glass window over the west door of the present building is the oldest stained glass in the San Joaquin Valley.

It’s beautiful outside and if you have a furry best friend, there’s no better place to go than the Barkleyville Dog Park. Located on four acres off of Feather River Drive, Barkleyville Dog Park includes a big dog area, a small dog area, and an agility course. While fido runs around and makes friends, there are plenty of benches for us humans to relax on, too. The park even includes dog water fountains and waste bags. Stockton is lucky to have such a beautiful and welcoming park for our lovable pups.

A symbol of the University of the Pacific, as well as of Stockton, the Burns Tower is not only beautiful but it’s useful. The tower serves as University information headquarters, a water storage tower, and the Carillon of Faith—a clock composed of 122 miniature bells that chime and keep time throughout the day. The Haggin Museum is truly a jewel of Stockton, California. Known as a thriving art and history museum to the world, the Haggin is like home to Stocktonians. Those of us who grew up here remember many a school field trip to the Haggin and are proud to bring our children here to learn about the history of the San Joaquin area and experience first-class art. The Haggin is home to the largest museum collection of major works by American painter Albert Bierstadt, as well the largest museum collection of original art works by "Golden Age" illustrator J.C. Leyendecker. On top of their exhibits, The Haggin hosts their 1st and 3rd Thursdays and 2nd Saturdays for Families events that invite the community to enjoy live music, art projects, and much more. The Haggin Museum has been making Stockton smile for 79 years, and it's safe to say that the Haggin will go on doing so for many a year to come.

The Stockton Cambodian Buddhist Temple (Wat Dharmararam) is a hidden jewel in our city. Tucked away on Carpenter Road off Highway 99, the Cambodian Buddhist Temple features over 90 colorful and larger than life, jewel-encrusted statues that celebrate the life and story of the Cambodian Buddha. The temple is also home to the annual Cambodian New Year Celebration in April. If you haven't been out to the temple, you're definitely in for a treat.

The San Joaquin County Parks and Recreation and the Delta Fly Fishers welcome anglers of all ages to the Oak Grove Regional Park for the 27th Annual Trout Bout on Saturday, November 19th. Try your hand at reeling in some of the approximately 1,700 pounds of Rainbow trout that will be planted at the park for the tournament. There will be Rainbow trout of all sizes up for grabs, even trophy-size trout.

The Annual Trout Bout features both Youth and Adult competitions. In each competition, the individual heaviest weight of one trout caught by a contestant wins a prize! Competitors are limited to five trout each. Kids 15 and under fish free, while adults must purchase a $5 fishing permit fee and have a valid California fishing license. The day begins at 6:15am with registration closing at 10:00am and the last weigh-in at 12:30pm. Start the day right with a morning full of fishing at the beautiful Oak Grove Regional Park. 7th Annual Run and Walk Against Hunger

Have any plans for this Thanksgiving morning? Wake up early for a good cause! On Thanksgiving morning November 24th, join 4,000 runners and walkers, burn calories, have a great time on the scenic Stockton waterfront, and help raise money for the Emergency Food Bank at the 7th Annual Run and Walk Against Hunger! Take part in a 10K/6.2 Mile Run or 5K/3.1 Mile Run or Walk and, if you can get the kids up, all children 9 and under can join in a ¼ Mile Kid’s run.

The run beings at the Stockton Banner Island Ballpark and proceeds along both sides of the Stockton Deepwater Channel past the Weber Point Event Center and out the Deepwater Channel along Weber Street. Enjoy the beautiful views of the waterfront on your Thanksgiving morning! There will be a family festival with information booths on nutrition and fitness afterwards. Participants are also urged to bring canned foods, paper and plastic bags to the event. All proceeds benefit the Emergency Food Bank and Family Services of Stockton/San Joaquin.

With the official start of the Fall season comes a long list of annual events that make this time of year very special for Stockton. Here’s a quick guide to fall activities in the Stockton area that are sure to keep you and your family entertained!

Stockton Thunder

Fall means it’s finally Stockton Thunder hockey time! Enjoy an exciting game at the Stockton Arena as the Thunder begin their 2011-2012 season hot off the heels of last season’s playoff stretch that left them six wins shy of a Kelly Cup championship. Get ready to shout, enjoy good food, and cheer on your Stockton Thunder—their opening night is against the Colorado Eagles.

Trick or Treat!

Fall also means it’s the spookiest time of the year, and Stockton has plenty of Halloween activities to get your little ones into the spirit! All Hallows’ Eve at the Oak Grove Nature Center is a fun and educational event where kids can explore the facts behind every bump in the night, make crafts such as masks and puppets, take a moonlit stroll through the native plant garden, and more! Bring your kids out to the University of Pacific’s 13th Annual Safe Trick or Treat where Pacific students, faculty, staff, and alumni hand out candy to hundreds of local children as they are led on trick or treat tours of the campus. Or even celebrate Halloween with a spooky, kid-friendly Haunted House benefiting the San Joaquin AIDS Foundation and The Haven of Peace. Last, but not least, your children will be sure to enjoy Howl-o-ween at the Micke Grove Zoo—a family friendly event including creepy, crawly animal presentations, crafts, games, goodies, a kid costume parade, and more!

For the adults, Stockton also hosts a good deal of adult-friendly Halloween activities. The Downtown Stockton Alliance Costume Pub Crawl promises to be a great night complete with crawlers-only drink specials, a costume contest with prizes, free VIP transportation, the Stockton Thunder hockey game, and no cover to venues with live music. The Friends of the Fox present the classic film, “Abbott & Costello’s ‘Hold that Ghost!’” at the Bob Hope Theatre complete with an organ concert. This year also brings an upscale Halloween event, Freak Night, to the University Plaza Waterfront Hotel with two dance floors, a costume contest, and special VIP lounge seating. Or enjoy Watts Winery’s Tricks & Giggles, an all-day event with wine tasting, Fat City Grilllers Supply barbecue contest, an afternoon hay ride through vineyards, and in the evening tri-tip dinner as magician James Anthony and comedian Bob Johnston entertain. Lastly, the Mexican Heritage Center and Gallery will be holding its annual Dia de los Muertos Art Exhibit marking the celebration of the Mexican Day of the Dead.

Dell'Osso Family Farm

Experience San Joaquin county’s rich agriculture first hand this Fall at one of the area’s many farms and pumpkins patches! Dell’Osso Family Farm in Lathrop features its famous corn maze, pumpkin patch, air-powered pumpkin blasting (you have to see it to believe it!), haunted house, train and tractor rides, zip lines, pony rides and petting zoo, face painting, speedway, and much, much more. Stock up on your pumpkins at the farm and also on locally grown fruit, nuts, and baked goods at the Dell’Osso county store. Or visit Stockton’s Country Side Farms and enjoy planting stations, a walnut gleaning station, u-pick berries, vegetables, flowers and hayrides, as well as a petting zoo, haystack tunnels, scarecrow making, and sandbox for the kids!


The Imani Wind Quintet

Fall also brings a rich calendar of great music to Stockton. The San Joaquin Delta College Fall Festival of Bands brings together the Delta Symphonic Band, Stockton Concert Band, and Wind Ensembles for one concert to celebrate the season. The Stockton Chorale begins its 60th season with their Autumn Collage complete with performances of Gabriel Fauré's breathtakingly beautiful Requiem. The Friends of Chamber Music presents the Imani Wind Quintet and the Stockton Symphony is proud to bring the Sphinx Virtuosi to Stockton.

Stocktoberfest 2011

With the leaves turning brown and beginning to fall, the weather (hopefully) becoming cooler, and summer fading away into autumn, only one thing comes to mind: Stocktoberfest!

On October 8th,2011 from 2:00pm till 10:00pm, the Waterfront Warehouse will play host to Stocktoberfest 2011. Modeled after a German Octoberfest, Stocktoberfest adds a Stockton twist to this traditional event complete with food, competitions, music, and of course, good brews! The first 700 Stocktoberfest guests will receive a glass beer stein and their first beer fill free. Once the inaugural keg is tapped, participants will be able to enjoy a long list of craft beers on tap including Spaten October & Spaten Premium, Woodchuck Amber Draft Cider, Pyramid Snow Cap, Blue Moon Harvest, Newcastle Brown Ale, New Belgium Ranger IPA, New Belgium’s Hoptober, Heineken and Coors Light. Enjoy your brew with a sausage or any of the other scrumptious food choices that will be on hand!

Once you’ve put your Stocktoberfest beer stein to good use and whet your appetite, try your hand at this year’s keg lifting competition! Or if that’s not your style, there’s always the chicken dance dance-off and, of course, a beer stein holding competition. Live music will be on hand with the 209 All Stars playing pop rock and reggae, Nothin’ Personal performing classic rock & roll and R&B and blues, and Bruno Cerri providing traditional accordion music. In conjunction with this year’s Stocktoberfest, Stockton REI and the San Joaquin Bike Coalition will be hosting a free bike valet at Stocktoberfest. A free bike check-up will be included. Also, Stockton Yacht Charters is offering a special reduced cruise rate during the Stocktoberfest festivities. Enjoy a 2 hour cruise for $10 per person out of the port and back. Enjoy a Summer Day at Oak Grove Regional Park!

As the dog days of summer begin to dwindle down and we all to start to set our sights on fall, you may be looking to make the most of this last month of summer. A Stockton summer wouldn’t really be right without a trip to Oak Grove Regional Park. Located near Spanos Park West, Oak Grove Regional Park boasts a gorgeous 180 acre oak tree preserve that has truly become a treasured staple of Stockton, California. Besides being the home to fishing derbies and the upcoming Annual Labor Day Pow-Wow, Oak Grove Regional Park features a wide range of activities and points of interest for the young and old alike.

Take a paddleboat ride!

Anglers and fisherman are welcome to fish from the 10-acre lake stocked with seasonal catfish and trout. Fishing at Oak Grove costs $3 for those 16 and older and a California fishing license is required. If getting out on the water is more your style, enjoy the weekend paddleboats and aqua cycles. Thirty minute water “vehicle” rentals are available from 10:00am to 6:00pm every April weekend till the first weekend of October. Standard paddleboats run $5 for a thirty minute rental and specialty paddleboats and aquacycles run at $10. Challenge friends to a boat race or simply enjoy paddling around the lake and enjoying the views.

Oak Nature Center at Oak Grove Regional Park

Learn about the flora and fauna native to the park and the San Joaquin Valley at the Oak Grove Nature Center. Open weekends from noon to 4:00pm (and weekdays by appointment), the Nature Center is completely run by volunteer docents who provide educational programs to the community and assist in the development and maintenance of the Nature Center and its outlying gardens. The Nature Center is full of displays and dioramas of live native animals, preserved wildlife specimens, and a Claudia Landeen School science project on owl diets. If you’re a history fan, check out artifacts of the native Yokut and Miwok people who once called Central California home. Enjoy hands-on exhibits like using microscopes to examine specimens and children’s activities including nature block puzzles, Native American pump drill experiments, and acorn pounding. Budding botanists will also enjoy the Native Plant Garden behind the Nature Center. Make sure to check out the special events at the Nature Center, like Astronomy in the Park happening September 3rd and Nature Nights on August 26th!

If you're feeling up for a stroll, take a hike through Oak Grove Regional Park’s two nature trails. The Yokuts Trail (.4 mile long) and the Miwok Trail (1.8 miles long) are handicapped accessible trails that offer the perfect chance to see native plants, animals, and oaks dating back centuries. While meandering through the park, you’ll also see that Oak Grove has four separate playgrounds. Three modern playgrounds complete with swings and jungle gyms and a rock play area perfect for safe climbing allows for little ones to burn off some extra energy. And for sports fans, Oak Grove Regional Park is home to an 18-hole disc golf course, expansive lawns for impromptu soccer games, and horseshoe pits.

Most importantly, Oak Grove Regional Park is so special to Stockton because it’s a great place to spend with family and friends. Set up a picnic on the grass or on a bench near the lake. The park's resident ducks and Canadian Geese will be sure to beg for any spare bread! Or if you’re celebrating a big event or anniversary, Oak Grove offers many rental facilities and outdoor picnic shelters. A list of available rental facilities along with prices and rental information can be accessed here. A favorite among family reunions, Oak Grove can also accommodate large groups looking to barbeque and enjoy some time out in the sun.

2011 Saint Basil's Greek Festival in Stockton

If you ask anyone who grew up in Stockton about their fondest Stockton summer memories, they will most probably recall a warm September night spent gobbling down delicious gyros, hoarding a pink box full of Greek pastries and confectionery treats, and dancing to authentic Greek music under blue and white tents at the annual Saint Basil’s Greek Festival. This year marks the festival’s 52nd year of bringing Greek food and culture to Stockton.

Running September 9th through September 11th, 2011, the Saint Basil’s Greek Festival is held in the outside courtyard of the Saint Basil Greek Orthodox Christian Church near the corner of March Lane and Pacific Avenue. Be sure to come with an empty stomach—because from opening till closing, festivalgoers can purchase a wide range of Greek food including lamb and chicken gyros, spanakopita (phyllo pastry with spinach and feta cheese), fresh lamb that is roasting on a spit, Greek salads, and much, much more. Top it off with a Greek beer, ouzo (an anise-flavored liquor), or coffee!

If you’ve got a sweet tooth, you definitely won’t want to miss the freshly made loukoumades (a fried-dough pastry soaked in honey and sprinkled with cinnamon and sesame--pictured to the left). You’ll also want to stop by the dining hall to pick out some treats from their wide selection of Greek pastries and breads--just be sure to get there early because they do sell out quick! All time favorites like baklava are sold, as well as kourambiethes (powdered sugar-covered cookies), Greek breads, and karythopita (Greek walnut cake).

For those looking to soak in Greek culture, the Festival includes live Greek music and traditional Greek dance performances, with plenty of chances for festivalgoers to join in as well. There are also opportunities each day to take a tour of the beautiful Saint Basil Greek Orthodox Christian Church. Also, browse the local vendor stands for jewelry, vases, candles, purses, and other hand-crafted items.

The Saint Basil’s Greek Festival is a must see Stockton festival that never disappoints. On both Friday and Saturday, September 9th and 10th, the festival runs from noon till 11:00pm, while the festival runs from noon till 8:00pm on Sunday, September 11th. Take in Local Theater with SCT and 42nd Street

Theater has always been a part of Stockton—from the times of the Gold Rush when miners were looking for cheap entertainment—to 1911 when the great Sarah Bernhardt performed La Dam Aux Camelias at the Yosemite Theatre—and to 1950 when a small group of “theatre enthusiasts” created the Stockton Civic Theatre. Our Town (pictured above) was the first show presented by the Stockton Civic Theatre and little did they know that their little theatre group would blossom and grow to reach its 61^st season. From straight plays, to children’s theater, to musicals, and to side-splitting comedies, the Stockton Civic Theatre has raised its curtains for hundreds of productions that have been entertaining Stocktonians for decades.

Today, The Stockton Civic Theatre is more alive than ever with its latest production of 42^nd Street. This musical tells the story of aspiring chorus girl Peggy Sawyer as she sets out to become a Broadway star. Complete with tap dancing, singing, and laughs, the last production of the 2010-2011 season is a huge audience pleaser and a show that director Jim Coleman has waited years to bring to SCT. And the wait was worth it because it’s been getting lots of buzz and raving reviews! With memorable songs and a cast of truly talented men and women, this show is a must see. 42^nd Street runs until July 24^th with shows running Thursday through Sunday. Bring Your Group to the Stockton Asparagus Festival!

The Stockton Asparagus Festival, the largest food fest in Northern California, is a great place to bring your group for a day of fun, food and shopping! With special pricing, easy drop off and pick up, and personalized service, the Asparagus Festival is a group friendly event with much to offer for all ages.

The 2011 Stockton Asparagus Festival will be held on April 15-17, 2011 on the Downtown Stockton waterfront.

While many of our groups come on Friday, groups are welcome all three days of the festival. Group ticket prices are $10 for Adults and $5 for Seniors and Youth over 12 (prices are typically for groups of 20+). For motor coach groups, the driver and the guide get in free. We have designated bus drop off and pick up near the main gate, with bus parking nearby. Special hotel rates are available for groups looking to stay the night.

So what is at the Stockton Asparagus Festival?

Well of course there is food! Crowd favorites in Asparagus Alley include Deep Fried (Tempura Battered) Asparagus (the most popular), Asparagus Pasta, the Aspara-Beef Sandwich, the Aspara-Burrito, Asparagus Ice Cream (new in 2010) and new this year we welcome the Foster Farms Aspara-Chicken Wrap! Looking for entertainment? The festival has two stages, with a variety of entertainment all three days. The Main Stage offers nationally recognized artists and the Family Stage is chock full of great family friendly local entertainment. Saturday also has the Deep Fried Asparagus Eating Competition at the Main Stage where nationally ranked competitive eaters come to compete for the world title.

Also groups may be interested in taking a cruise on the delta aboard the 149 passenger Island Girl Yacht located just outside the festival footprint. Cruises can be scheduled for before, during or after your festival visit and typically last about an hour.

The Official Stockton Activities Guide (formerly known as the Visitors Guide) is now available both online and in hard copy from the Stockton Conference & Visitors Bureau. The guide is a colorful 68 page magazine chock-full new photos and great information for visitors and residents alike. The guide features an annual events calendar, arts and entertainment, family attractions, sports, farm and agriculture attractions and much more.

New this year is the integration of QR codes. These codes, when used with a mobile device, bring the user directly to specific pages on the VisitStockton.org website. This provides the user access to the most recent information available in the click of a button.

December 4th, 2010 marks the date of the kick off for the Stockton holiday season!

New for 2010, A Starlight Night will be a shopping, dining, holiday celebrating day of fun, culminated by the lighting of the official Stockton holiday tree and the always popular Lighted Boat Parade!

Events will be held at shopping and dining area's on the Pacific Avenue corridor and Downtown Stockton. Participating venues are: Lincoln Center, StoneCreek Village, Sherwood Mall, the Miracle Mile and Downtown Stockton. There will be visits from Santa, great music, Christmas tree lighting's, shopping deals and more. Events start as early as 10am and go thru the evening.

San Joaquin RTD will provide FREE trolley and bus rides along Pacific Avenue via the participating shopping areas. These complimentary rides are from 11am to 10pm.

The evening will finish in downtown Stockton at Weber Point with the lighting of the Stockton holiday tree at 5:45pm and the Delta Reflections Lighted Boat Parade at 6pm. See video from the 2009 Lighted Boat Parade.

The Downtown Stockton Alliance will also host a "Cocktail for a Claus" pub crawl style fundraiser in downtown starting at 5pm for those 21 and older.

So, do you like running and walking events? November in Stockton may as well be "Stockton running month" as two big run/walk events are on the calendar. The first is an all new event, the Stockton Half Marathon and the second is a returning community favorite, the 6th Annual Run & Walk Against Hunger!

On Sunday, November 14th. The Stockton Half Marathon will be a first for our area, and its hip Rock and Roll theme should make it an exciting running event for Stockton. Not only does the event have the Half Marathon (about 13.1 miles), but there is also a 5K Run/Walk. The event starts and ends at the Hilton Stockton and should draw about 1,000 runners & walkers.

On Thanksgiving (November 25th) Stockton will host the 6th Annual Run & Walk Against Hunger. This family friendly, popular event should attract over 4,000 participants! Choose to take part in the 10K, 5K (run/walk) or 1/4 miles kids fun run. All of this for a good cause benefiting the efforts of the Stockton Emergency Food Bank. The venue is great. All of it takes place in Downtown Stockton around the waterfront and ending in the Stockton Ballpark!

What great reasons to get out there and exercise, enjoy the sights of Stockton and have fun doing it!

Where to Camp in Stockton?

We are just a few weeks away from the 2nd Annual Stockton Restaurant Week - a celebration of local cuisine and local restaurants. The event will be held at various restaurants around Stockton from September 19-25, 2010.

During Stockton’s 2nd annual week-long event, participating restaurants will offer special three-course menus that will showcase some of the region’s most talented chefs and the culinary diversity of Stockton. The prix-fixe menus will priced at $9.95 per person for lunch, and $15, $20 or $25 per person for dinner, exclusive of beverages, tax and gratuity. Participating restaurants may also offer other dining and beverage specials during the week.

Stockton Restaurant Week was created by the Stockton Conference & Visitors Bureau to highlight Stockton as a diverse dining destination and allow our many local foodies and families an opportunity to enjoy special prix-fixe three course menus from a diverse selection of participating local restaurants. Considering the current economic climate, this week-long event will allow diners to discover new restaurants in Stockton and enjoy all their favorites at a reduced price. With these affordable prices, Stocktonians will have the opportunity to dine out all week.

Jewel of Stockton: The Haggin Museum

I have lived in Stockton for nearly five years and, until last week, I had never visited the Haggin Museum. Words can’t express how much of a mistake it was to wait that long. The Haggin Museum was built in 1931 and hosts an impressive collection of art, history and special exhibition displays. Additionally, the museum hosts various events for all ages and has a wonderful store full of unique gift items, books, posters, note cards and other merchandise inspired by the museum’s collections and temporary exhibitions.

The Haggin Museum has five permanent art galleries: the Hull Gallery with American western landscape paintings by Albert Bierstadt and other artists and the Haggin Room with Realist and Impressionist 19^th Century European and American paintings. The McKee Room with European Realist and Orientalist paintings, features works by Jean-Léon Gérôme. Many of his pieces will soon be a part of a travelling exhibition in the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles and the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. The New Gallery has original art works by “Golden Age” illustrator J.C. Leyendecker, who was one of the most popular commercial artists of the early 20^th century and is best known for his cover work for Collier’s magazine and the Saturday Evening Post. Finally, the Arcade hosts American landscape paintings.

Additionally, there are seven permanent history galleries: the Pioneer Room traces Stockton history from the time of early Native Americans to the modern day, the California Room includes explorers, missions, and the Gold Rush, Holt Hall features Benjamin Holt’s invention workshop and Caterpillar tractor, the Jennie Hunter Rooms feature the 1890 homestead of Miss Jennie Hunter and family who were prosperous wheat ranchers, the Storefronts are replicas of turn-of-the-century California shops and a school, the American Indian Gallery has artifacts from numerous Native America cultures, and the Vehicle Gallery has early fire engines, including Old Betsy and WWII Willy the Jeep. Throughout the museum there are pieces of furniture, pottery and other small items that all belonged to the Haggin family.

Of distinct interest to returning museum-goers are the two Temporary Exhibition Galleries. The Lower West Gallery and the Upper West Gallery change every six to eight weeks, typically displaying special exhibitions on loan from other museums or drawn from the Haggin’s permanent collections. Currently, the Lower West Gallery features California Impressionism: Selections from The Irvine Museum. The Upper West Gallery has Bustles & Balustrades: the Link between Victorian Dress and Architecture. Both of these exhibits are only featured through August 15. The Stockton Art League’s 56^th Juried Exhibition and Sale will take over both galleries from September 2 to October 31.

Whether or not you have ever visited the Haggin Museum, be sure to check out the ever-changing temporary galleries. Admission is only $5 for adults 18 and up, $2.50 for youths aged 10-17, seniors and students with an I.D. and admission is free from children under 10 with an adult and on the first Saturday of every month. The museum is open 1:30-5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, 12-5 on Saturdays and Sundays and from 1:30-9 p.m. on the first and third Thursdays of every month. Fun and Educational: Children's Museum of Stockton

The Children’s Museum of Stockton is one of the most exciting places for a kid to visit in the city. As stated in the brochure, “Set up to be an educational experience from the moment young visitors step through the door, the museum features hands-on, play based exhibits that will enhance a child’s understanding of how the world works.”

The exhibit floor hosts over a dozen child-sized environments that recreate the ambiance of a small city. The numerous exhibits include Conservation Cottage, presented by the Stockton Area Water Suppliers and is funded by the Prop 50 Environment Education Grant and the State of California Office of Water Use Efficiency; Safety City, presented by the Safety Council, includes a police car, firetruck and ambulance; and The Park is presented by the Central Valley Association for Education of Young Children and is an area reserved for children four years and under only.

At each exhibit in the museum’s town, there are tools and machines that can be manipulated and used by the children in order to get a hands-on experience, such as weighing postcards at the post office or counting money at the bank. Stacey, the woman working the front desk the day I visited for the first time said, “I love kids and I love seeing the joy they feel when they get to play with everything in the museum—the amazement on their faces is incredible!”

The idea of a children’s museum in Stockton was inspired by a similar one in Washington D.C. Janet Geng was among the teachers wounded when a lone gunman opened fire on the Cleveland School playground in 1989, where he killed five young children and wounded 30 others. With a fire in her heart and an idea for change, Geng returned to Stockton and organized the first members of the Board of Directors and they created a safe place for children to play and learn.

Stacey put it perfectly when she said, “The Children’s Museum is a place where kids are able to play and have fun—to be themselves and use their imagination.”

The Children's Museum of Stockton is open Monday-Friday from 9-4 and Saturday 10-5 through August 7th--after that date, the Fall hours will begin. The museum is located at 402 W. Weber Ave and admission is $5 per person (2 years and under play for free).

A Quick and Quality Meal at a Great Price: Whirlows Tossed & Grilled

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Stockton has an amazing selection of restaurants you can’t find anywhere else. A great example is Whirlows Tossed & Grilled, located in the Lincoln Center and on Miracle Mile.

Whirlows boasts an incredible menu that features a wide variety of salads, sandwiches and smoked BBQ and grilled meats. They also offer a few extra favorites such as “Not Your Ordinary Mac and Cheese” and “Blue Onion Rings”—onion rings with blue cheese. The best part: it is all served in a "quick-dine" fashion, so no need to take a long lunch break to enjoy your Whirlows meal.

Personally, I’m a huge fan of salads and my favorite thing about Whirlows is the “Build Your Own Salad”—a half order is $5.95 and a full is $6.95. Guests choose from three different mixes of greens, six different dressings and add seven toppings of your choice. There is also the option of adding tri-tip, chicken, turkey or pulled pork for only $2.00. The half-size is more than filling for me, even without meat added!

On my most recent visit to Whirlows, my guest tried the "Grilled Portabello" sandwich and said, "The burger was cooked very well and the garlic spread they added was great--and there's nothing like fresh sautéed mushrooms!” The sandwich alone is served for $7.40 and guests can add French Fries, mashed potatoes or vegetables for just $2.10.

With a large number of options, Whirlows is a great place for a quick, but quality lunch or dinner at a great price. Be sure to head over to one of the two locations next time you’re hungry!

Concerts in the Park--Great Music for the Summer Nights

Concerts in the Park 2011 Line Up!

Warm summer nights and music just go hand-in-hand. The City of Stockton Community Services Department, in partnership with the Stockton Musician's Association, has taken this idea and created a wonderful, free event for everyone to enjoy.

The Concert in the Park series is an annual event in its 58th year. Concerts by artists such as Jazz City, Stardust and Waterloo are held in Victory Park every Wednesday night in June, July and August from 6-8pm. The concerts are held in conjunction with the Music Industry Music Performance Trust, Stockton Musician's Association and co-sponsored by various business and community organizations

If you have not had a chance to attend a Concert in the Park yet, mark your calendars. It is an event the whole family can enjoy (even the dog!), it is free and the music is great. This summer's series hasn't even hit the half-way mark yet, with seven shows remaining.

Taste of San Joaquin—A Delicious Treat for the Holiday Weekend

The third annual Taste of San Joaquin event was held on Saturday, July 3 at Weber Point in Downtown Stockton. This year the event hosted over 6,500 hungry guests—that’s more than 2,000 more people than last year.

The event featured live classic Rock and Blues entertainment, a display of over 50 classic cars, 40 BBQ teams competing in the Way Out West BBQ Championship and locally owned restaurants and a variety of micro and mainstream brews.

All proceeds from Taste of San Joaquin benefit locally owned and operated restaurants, local charities and the improvement of Downtown Stockton. For each $1 tasting ticket that was redeemed at the event, $0.70 goes to the locally owned food business and $0.30 went to local nonprofit organizations.

Again, the City of Stockton will not have an official fireworks display for 2010 due to budget cuts.

The good news is we can buy our fireworks locally in Stockton first time in over 40 years!

This weekend's big event is Taste of San Joaquin, an event with over 40 BBQ teams competing in the Way Out West BBQ Championship, 50 classic cars, great beer, local restaurants, great blues and rock n roll, and more. Come by and check out this third annual Independence day Celebration!

Stockton Ports Make a Grand Television Debut

On Tuesday, June 29, the Stockton Ports game against the Bakersfield Blaze was featured on the MLB Network and the Comcast Hometown Network--and what a great game to showcase to the nation. With the help of three home runs, the Ports prevailed over the Blaze with a final score of 8-6.

Despite the 11:05 first pitch time on a Tuesday, the Stockton Ballpark hosted a crowd to be proud of. Among the many Ports fans in attendance were representatives from local elementary schools and YMCA programs. With the sun shining and the warm temperatures, it was a great day for baseball for all fans in attendance.

The game was the first Ports game televised nationally in franchise history. It was simulcast on the MLB Network and Comcast Hometown Network, a regional cable network covering nearly 1.7 million homes in Northern and Central California.

In conjunction with the television debut, the Ports and Comcast encouraged fans to "Pack the Park" to show the national and regional television audience all the terrific things the City of Stockton and the Ports have to offer. Comcast purchased 500 tickets and meals for fans, which were donated to local charities through the United Way and San Joaquin County Office of Education.

In order to better showcase Stockton businesses at the game, the Ports offered a ticket special through the Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce to chamber members.

As exciting as the televised game and win was, the Stockton Ports season is far from over! Be sure to check out one of the remaining games this season and cheer on your hometown team.

Lincoln Center Live Nights Off to a Fantastic Start

Friday, June 18th was the first of four summer events held at the Lincoln Center. The wine and art stroll gave guests the opportunity to sample wines from 15 local wineries including Lucas Winery, Van Ruiten Family Vineyards, Oak Ridge Winery, Borra Vineyards, Mokelumne Glen Vineyards, Peltier Station, Harmony Wynelands, Miramont Estate Vineyards, St. Jorge Winery and more—all with just the purchase of a wine glass with a minimum $1.00 donation to United Cerebral Palsy.

The Lincoln Center was full of local artists and guests were able to check out their unique works and watch art demonstrations. There was also live music by RBX on the main stage, along with jazz musician Travis Vega, trumpet and horn player Franky B, and pianist Bill Erickson.

A number of Lincoln Center shops had trunk shows, special promotions and cheese and chocolate tastings. There was also a Kids Zone with live music by The Bad Goods, a jump house and pizza by the slice from David’s Pizza.

The North Center sponsor was Big Valley Ford and the Kids Zone was sponsored by Berberian European Motors.

Downtown Stockton Certified Farmers Market

The Downtown Stockton Certified Farmers Market offers fresh, locally grown and organic produce and flowers, baked goods, and original, handmade arts and crafts every Friday at DeCarli Square from 11am-6pm.

The 2nd Friday of June, July and August, market hours extend until 9 pm, and downtown comes alive with the Art Walk, beer garden, business specials and entertainment throughout the evening. Lunch time hours feature a live cooking demonstration by downtown chefs and activities for kids are held throughout the day.

The event on June 11th included “Sing for Their Supper” Karaoke hosted by the Gospel Center Rescue Mission, art by Dolly Sellars, Sabrina Morris, Patricia Cherry, Jason Christopher, Danielle Adams, Anthony Toth-Fejel and Linda Knoll—to name a few—a beer garden and, of course, plenty of fresh food for sale.

Stockton Fireworks Go On Sale June 28th

For the first time, the city of Stockton will allow and sell safe and sane fireworks within the city limits beginning on June 28th.

As you know, any type of fireworks on the 4th of July have been illegal in Stockton. The city council has changed the ordinance and now the 4th of July will surely arrive with a bang.

30 fireworks stands will be selling safe and sane fireworks throughout Stockton. Local non-profit organizations will operate the fireworks stands, and will raise funds for their organizations with the proceeds.

A Stockton Gem: Manny's California Fresh Cafe

Stockton is lucky to have a plethora of dining options throughout the city. In particular, it boasts a large number of restaurants that can only be found here--such as Manny's California Fresh Cafe.

I have eaten at Manny's a number of times since I moved to Stockton and have never had a bad experience--nor have I ever heard a complaint out of anyone else. The service is timely, there is a variety of food options, the atmosphere is casual and the lemonade is particularly fantastic.

During my most recent visit to Manny's I had the deli croissant sandwich with salami, fries and a lemonade. While I'm sure it wasn't the healthiest choice on the menu, it was absolutely delicious and at a perfectly reasonable price. Admittedly, I have never tried any, but I have heard great things about the various oyster dishes as well.

A great choice for either lunch or dinner, if you have yet to try Manny's California Fresh Cafe, put it on your to-do list--you will be thankful you did!

Manny's is located on the Miracle Mile at 1612 Pacific Avenue, only about a block north of Harding Way, and is open 10am-9:30pm daily.

During the evening of Wednesday, June 2, Delta Discovery Cruises welcomed its first group of passengers on the “Island Girl”, now docked at the Stockton Marina. The VIP event hosted many notable Stocktonians, such as Mayor Ann Johnston, Police Chief Blair Ulring, numerous Chamber members and representatives of local businesses and attractions—The Haggin Museum and Whirlow’s, to name a few. The event consisted of an hour-long open house for guests to see every aspect of the “Island Girl” and to enjoy refreshments or the bar. Promptly at 5:45, the “Island Girl” pulled away from the dock and took the guests on an hour tour along the delta.

Delta Discovery Cruises is a family owned business that began offering scenic cruises in 2008 out of the Pittsburg Marina. Due to the success there, the company decided to expand operations to include the City of Stockton. The “Island Girl” is a luxurious 149-passenger motor yacht with space for dancing, dining or relaxing, as well as a full bar with liquor, wine, beer, sodas and juices.

On Wednesday, the yacht was near capacity, but not uncomfortably so. The weather was perfectly warm with a slight breeze and everyone had something positive to say about the cruise by the time the “Island Girl” returned to the dock.

Cruises are offered seven days a week all year long with various types to choose from, such as Taco Tuesdays at Windmill Cove, Salsa Nights, Champagne Brunch, educational tours, themed cruises and many more.

Stockton Restaurants Showcase Locally Grown Asparagus!

The Great Stockton Asparagus Dine Out has begun and runs thru April 11th.

The event, while highlighting the importance locally grown produce, will also spotlight local restaurants and their chefs. Over 20 restaurants are participating serving up over 50 entrees, appetizers, sides, desserts and cocktails!

Casa Flores (Marina) showed their stuff by whipping up Asparagus Enchilada's on Fox 40...I can tell you the sauce is amazing! Check it out:

Historic Roads: The Lincoln Highway and Stockton

Did you know that the original Lincoln Highway ran through Stockton? You may be asking yourself, "What is the Lincoln Highway?"

Well before this nation had numbered highways and interstates there were roads. The Lincoln Highway was the first coast to coast road that linked New York City to San Francisco. Much of the road is now US 30 and I-80. The road ran thru Stockton from 1913 to 1927, before it was realigned north across the Carquinez Strait (current day I-80). This road was the first national memorial to President Lincoln and stretched 3,389 miles.

Cities were very fortunate to have a place on the Lincoln Highway. It brought folks through there towns from across the country. The route through Stockton originally came south down Lower Sacramento Road to what is now Pacific Avenue (past Lincoln Center ...coincidence?) and jogged over to El Dorado somewhere before Harding on the Miracle Mile. It traveled down El Dorado (and modern day Center Street) to Charter Way where is veered west to head through Lathrop and down to Tracy. A later realignment of the road followed Highway 99 coming into Stockton on Cherokee Road to Wilson and down to Weber Avenue where is met back up with El Dorado.

There is no doubt that this road attributed to the success of Stockton in it heyday of the teens and twenties.

Sadly, any markings or signage recognizing this historic roads presence in northern San Joaquin County and Stockton are non-existent. We are going to work to change that through the Lincoln Highway Association California Chapter and with our local government agencies before any memory of the road is long gone. This coll bit of local history should not be forgotten....

A monument was recently erected in Lathrop marking the route.

You may also recall the convoy that came through town in 2009 following the original route to commemorate a 1919 Army convoy.

Celebrating the Spear!

Every year in April around Stockton you can just taste the anticipation for the signature event of the year--the Stockton Asparagus Festival.

Well now for the first time you can literally taste great Asparagus before the festival during the Great Stockton Asparagus Dine Out. To be held from April 1st thru the 11th, the dine out will showcase local restaurants that integrate locally grown asparagus into a menu item. No set prices or menus, like our Stockton Restaurant Week, restaurants can feature appetizers, entrees, desserts or even drinks!

The goal is to get locals to once again celebrate dining in Stockton while supporting locally grown food. The farm to fork concept...yum!

We are working now with Zuckerman Farms to coordinate fresh asparagus from Victoria Island to our restaurants for the event. We will also be working with the Asparagus Commission and the Stockton Asparagus Festival to promote the event.

Stockton's Lighted Boat Parade = Family Fun!

I brought my family, my wife and two boys (Ages 4 & 11), out to the 30th Annual Delta Reflections Lighted Boat Parade held December 5th in Downtown Stockton. The event was kicked off by the cities annual Christmas Tree lighting and great music from the Cesar Chavez High School Choir.

On this chilly night folks lined up along the railing facing west from Weber Point to view more than 50 lighted boats that travel from near the Marina West Yacht Club (the event organizer) all the way down to McCloud Lake at Weber Point where they turn around near the Stockton Arena and Waterfront Hotel.

Boats of all sizes, from huge yachts and houseboats down to little bass boats, are lit up with a variety of Christmas decor. Lights, music, costumes, blow ups, yard decor--you name it, it was on boats reflected beautifully by the channel waters. My boys loved it. Lots of "ooohs and ahhhs" and plenty of "Merry Christmas." The boats looked both beautiful and very cool.

The parade has many great viewing points from both the north and south side of the channel and Weber Point. Regulars brought chairs and blankets (good idea!) to stick in for the entire parade which can last well over an hour.

This is one of those holiday "don't miss" events. How many cities have these great lighted boat parades? Especially ones that come right through downtown! On top of the parade and tree lighting, holiday events were being held downtown and on the Miracle Mile and there was a Hockey game at the Arena at 7:30. Lots to do...

Typically held the first Saturday in December. Mark your calendars and bring the blankets. Your family is sure to enjoy.

Stockton Tweetup #1

Tonight, Valley Brew became the place to be in Stockton as we kicked off our first Stockton Tweetup. What exactly is a Tweetup? Well, as my teenager so eloquently told her younger sister, it's a meet-up of Twitter users.

Wes Rhea, Director of the Stockton Conference & Visitors Bureau, took the lead in organizing the event. Rod Villagomez and I were lucky enough to lend a hand. Our goal was to host an event that would provide attendees with a comfortable environment to meet and mingle with others in the local social media scene, to make social media more social.

We had a great turn-out. Thirty or so attendees ate, drank and were merry as they put voices and real-life faces to the avatars they see on Twitter. There were many introductions and good conversation about our community, technology, social media and this crazy concept of Tweetups. Having the opportunity to chat with some great local people made this a very memorable night for me; the Twitter scene in Stockton is full of some awesome people!

We raffled off some gift cards and a holiday floral table centerpiece generously donated by Patt from Elegant Essence.

Great Golf In Stockton...

One year ago, after successfully avoiding it my whole life, I started playing golf. I had enough of the heckling from my brothers and friends. It seemed to them that I was the only person in the world not playing this silly game. My first game was at Swenson Park Golf Course and we played the 9-hole, par 3 course. I planned on only playing that one time. I did not expect to like it.

My first time was a little awkward, not just for me, but for the rest of my foursome as well. I barely kept the ball in the fairway and I approached every shot with questions like "Which club do I use from here?" and "Do I really have to hit the ball from there?".

I survived my first outing and I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would! At the advice of my brother, we did not keep score that first time but I'm sure I shot somewhere just above 72. I always heard that was a good score, just didn't think it's good to hit that on the short course. I have been back a few times since last year. Well, actually, I can admit now that I might just be considered a weekend regular at Swenson.

There are two courses: the executive 9 hole, par 27 course and the full 18 hole, par 72 course. Both courses are beautifully laid out with lots of towering trees. There are a just a few water hazards and bunkers along the way. As a municipal course, it doesn't require membership or a fortune to play here. On the weekends you can play 18 holes with a cart for $42. My personal favorite is playing the short course in twilight hours, currently after 3 p.m., all the golf you can play before the course closes (on the short course) for just $9.

The club house staff are very friendly. From the the very first time I played there, they have treated me like a valued customer. The course marshals are knowledgeable and friendly as well. The real reason I love Swenson, though, is the restaurant. Andre's On The Green has an awesome selection of burgers and sandwiches. They are famous locally for their french fries; they have more flavors of french fries than I have clubs in my bag! Along with the tasty food at Andre's, the people there are awesome. For as long as I can remember, (keep in mind that I've only been playing golf for a year) Stacey and Pat have been there on the weekends, working their tails off, feeding hungry golfers, and always with a smile.

You don't have to play golf to eat there. Sounds obvious but I didn't know that until after I took up this game. I would've never thought to go to a golf course for lunch but if you're in the area, I would highly recommend the club sandwich with bacon ranch fries. Did I mention their fries?

If you're brand new to golf or you're a seasoned pro, there is great golf in Stockton at Swenson Park Golf Course. You can find them at 6803 Alexandria Place, across the street from Lincoln High School. For more information, call them at 209-937-7360.

Stockton's Underbelly

Beneath the image of ne'er-do-wells, pessimists, juvenile delinquents and criminals lies a rarely seen underbelly of Stockton. Rarely seen, for now. Their numbers are small but growing. What should average Stocktonians do? Is it possible that this underbelly is starting to show it's, um, belly?

This mob actually likes Stockton. Its members choose to live here and are proud to call Stockton their home.

Until recently, their pro-Stockton attitude was reserved mostly for local politicians, door-to-door salesmen and a handful of Record reporters.

For years, this crowd hid in the shadows of the city and kept mostly to themselves. They silently walked around their neighborhoods, secretly reveling in their happiness. Individually, they were harmless. But now they seem to be mobilizing.

What's to blame for the resurgence of this once silent population? Drugs? Gangs? Rock music? Nope, none of the above. The culprit here is none other than this new-fangled internet. Yep, the kids (and adults) are getting all hopped up on this computer technology thing. Sure, it started off innocent enough. In the early days, Stocktonians flocked to America Online and CompuServe. Years later, these Stockton faithful discovered MySpace and then it was only a matter of time before they stepped up to Twitter and Facebook.

They are using Twitter and Facebook to find out about what's going on in our town. They are creating blogs to share their unfiltered opinions. They're using their computers and cell phones to tell others about their favorite restaurants and complain about local politics. There are many different perspectives, and social networking allows them all to connect with fellow Stocktonians that they would not have likely connected with before.

So, if you've been sitting on the social networking fence, wondering if it's for you, jump in, you might just like it. For starters, follow @Stockton_CVB on Twitter and become a fan of the Stockton Conference and Visitors Bureau on Facebook.

One of my original hopes when creating this blog was to engage a few choice Stocktonians in assisting me with sharing the great things about Stockton. Guest bloggers. A sort of CVB Deputy! We are finally at that point!

A person I have come to know as a true believer in Stockton and all that we have to offer is Matt Beckwith of Podcast Stockton. Matt's Podcast Stockton episodes highlight great and interesting topics that you wouldn't find elsewhere on the web and beyond. They are well produced, interesting and honest. Listeners to Podcast Stockton will surely learn a thing or two about the wonderful offerings and happenings in Stockton.

Matt will be joining the CVB here on this blog sharing his experiences and his thoughts about all things Stockton.

A Few Updates from Your Visitors Bureau

There never seems to be enough time to write on this blog. Always being pulled one way or another. So here are a few updates on stuff I have talked about before and other random thoughts.

Hope everyone saw the article on Agritourism this past weekend in our local paper. As I mentioned in a previous blog, Ag Tourism is something we have our sights set on. Look for a cooperative effort between my counterparts in Lodi and Manteca and others to put together a Farm Trails Map for San Joaquin County. Let's hope by year end?

Stockton Restaurant Week is a mere 39 days away, and we have about 20 restaurants signed up throughout Stockton. We are very happy with that number! We are in the process of getting our postcards and posters. we have ads in September running in the Record, San Joaquin Magazine, and all of the neighborhood publications. We are about to start posting menus in mid-August. That is when the fun begins!

The episode of Country Music Televisions new show "All Jacked Up" (from our last blog) that was filmed in Stockton last month will likely air in September. They don't have the Stockton Monster Cycle episode listed yet. Will let you know when they do! If you missed our video, check it out here.

The Downtown Stockton Alliance, which successfully produced the Taste of San Joaquin event on July 4th, has announced their next signature event - Stocktoberfest! Downtown Stockton’s Stocktoberfest will be held on Saturday, October 10, from 4 pm until 11 pm, at the Waterfront Warehouse on Weber Avenue (445 W Weber Avenue). Stocktoberfest features collectible glass beer steins; authentic German food, and live entertainment ranging from polka to local rock. Activities throughout the night will include lovely ladies in traditional German dress and men in lederhosen, keg lifting competitions, pretzel tosses and, of course, beer stein holding competitions! Modeled after the traditional Oktoberfest in Germany, Stocktoberfest seating will be outdoors on long benches and tables under a lit tent and the festival will open with the tapping of the first keg by local dignitaries. Should be fun!

The Stockton Marina is getting closer to being completed. Most of the landscaping is finished. There is still a bit to do on the promenade on Weber Ave to Center Street. We can hope for some sort of soft opening in September I would imagine. See our last update video here.

Will start working on the 2010 version of the Stockton Activities/Visitors Guide soon. We start with ad sales and work on content from now until December. Should be out by early January. We are always looking for new photos...if you want to share, let me know!

Filming in Stockton: CMT's "All Jacked Up"

Filming wrapped up this morning on an episode of Country Music Television's new show "All Jacked Up," with host C. Thomas Howell The episode will feature Stockton's own "Monster Cycle" built by local Gregory Dunham. The Monster Cycle is in the Guinness Book of World Records as the Tallest Rideable Motorcycle!

Location filming took place throughout Stockton, beginning with the old Stockton Iron Works Building on Harrison Street behind the Stockton Ballpark. This old brick and tin building made a great backdrop for the colorful behemoth. The crew then move to downtown around the Cinemaplex where they stopped for a brief lunch at Cancun. After a minor mechanical delay the crew moved up north to Adelberto's Mexican Food on Hammer Lane to film some great "drive thru" scenes. From there, they headed out to Koe's, a "biker bar" in the Morada area of Stockton to film their final shots with the bike.

Today (July 28, 2009) was spent filming a few final bumper or lead in shots around Stockton with the host including stops at the Marina and Carl's Restaurant.

The episode will air in August and the Stockton Monster Cycle segment will be about six minutes long.

Stockton has a long history of film, and these little television productions are great business for our city. They stay and dine locally, hire local help, and this crew even paid for the use of two Stockton PD for a day. They also shoot a lot of great Stockton b-roll which could be used in the future.

One of our duties here at the Visitors Bureau is we are also the Stockton/San Joaquin Film Commission. We work with these production companies on anything we can including site selection, finding crew, lodging, police and city coordination and more. It is something we would love to spend more time doing if budget allowed, so we are plugging along the best we can.

The crew and production team was a pleasure to work with and I think we were a good host. Looking forward to seeing Stockton highlighted on the show and hopefully we can see more of this in the future....

Recession has folks looking for affordable things to do!

With the current economy as it is, and with no real change in sight this summer travel season, we have put together a growing list of activities and events in Stockton that are FREE or Low Cost (under $10).

The list, with over 20 ideas for free and nearly free activities, is a work in progress and I expect it to grow over the next few months. We have a link on the top of the free stuff page for anyone who wishes to submit their ideas.

The goal is to inspire visitors who are on a budget to visit Stockton and enjoy the many activities we have available for free. We also hope locals will take advantage and do a little "backyard" tourism and enjoy a few of the activities right in their own city.

Having fun does not always cost money. Take a look at the list, find something you haven't done in a while and enjoy something free for a change!

Downtown Stockton Marina Making Progress

It is mid July and as much as we would love to have boats sailing in and out of our new marina, that is not the case. When the Stockton Marina project started last September they said it would take 12 months. And though many hoped they would be ahead of schedule, it seems more likely they are right on time. So, the Stockton Marina is NOT open to the public...yet.

Much of the water side construction has finished. The long term covered berths and guest docks are complete and await final inspection. The guest docks have even been used for a couple special events, like Asparagus Festival and 4th of July, but these opportunities have been solely for boat clubs and groups.

The large component of the project is the Joan Darrah Promenade, a pedestrian walking area on both sides of the channel. This is still under construction, but has made a lot of progress. On the south shore the sidewalks are all in and the crews are putting the final touches on the pavers. Many benches are in and some partial light poles. Landscaping has only been completed at the far west end, near Morelli Boat Launch. There you will find a grassy amphitheater looking area with some really cool public art. I imagine soon you will see grass and other landscaping being installed on the Weber street area, also known as South Seawall Park (fancy name huh?).

From what I have gathered, construction will likely last another month or so on the promenade. Final touches and inspections are to be made on the actual marina. But even with this, we still may not have boat zipping in and out of our guest docks.

The city is finalizing its process to hire a firm to run and manage the Stockton Marina and Morelli Boat Launch. This is probably a good thing as municipalities should not be in the boat and marina business. The firm will likely be a large (possibly nationwide) firm experienced in managing venues and parks such as our marina. They will be responsible for day to day operations of the marina and will likely set (or at least have a say in) the rates for long term berthing,day and overnight stays at the marina. We are really hoping they work with our friends at Delta River Cruise and get the cruise boat back in Downtown Stockton.

So expect to hear something in mid or late August or September. Boating group are already contacting the city about BBQ's, Poker Runs and a myriad of other organized boating events that happen all of the time out on the Delta.

The delay is probably a good thing. This will give the new Stockton Marina management company and the city time to work out the kinks in time for the much busier traditional boating season next spring and summer. And the boats will come. And it will be good.

Judging at the Way Out West BBQ Championship

On the 4th of July, Stockton hosted the Way Out West BBQ Championship as part of the downtown Stockton Taste of San Joaquin event. I, having been part of the initial meetings, scored myself a slot as a judge for the contest. This was my first time judging a BBQ contest, though I am quite the food and BBQ connoisseur.....at least in my own mind.

This is serious stuff. Very official. The event was judged using the Kansas City Barbeque Society Rules (KCBS) and Scorecards. There were 24 judges to judge 24 BBQ teams. The teams were from all over California, some being very serious competitors. Judging started at 11am and judges were thoroughly briefed on their duties.

We even took an oath: "I do solemnly swear to objectively and subjectively evaluate each Barbeque meat that is presented to my eyes, my nose, my hands and my palate. I accept my duty to be an Official KCBS Certified Judge, so that truth, justice, excellence in Barbeque and the American Way of Life may be strengthened and preserved forever."

Each table of six judges had at least one or two Certified BBQ Judges (CBJ) as a leader. Each judge has a judging plate (actually a 11x17 piece of pre-printed paper), and a scoring card for each meat. The scoring system is from 9 to 2, all whole numbers between two and nine may be used to score an entry. 9 excellent, 8 very good, 7 above average, 6 average, 5 below average, 4 poor, 3 bad, and 2 inedible. Judging is anonymous. Teams are identified by a random number generated at turn in. There is not really any way to know who you are tasting or if they will win or place.

First up for judging was Chicken at 11am. Smoked chicken is good overall, and how it is done differs from team to team. The first thing judges do with each meat is judge it for appearance. The CBJ shows the meat to each judge and it is scored. You do this for all 6 entries each judge has to taste. Like much of food judging, appearance is subjective, but there are some guidelines. It should look appetizing, like something you want to eat. Some are heavy saucers, some are not. All sat in beds of garnish - typically romaine lettuce and parsley. Once judged on appearance, the chicken is then judged on taste and texture (tenderness). Out of 6 pieces of chicken I liked 2. The others were okay, some had odd or no taste, or were not tender. One was way too spicy, and left the meat tasteless. One had grilled the skin to crisp it up, but in turn overcooked the chicken. Though the skin is attached for the tasting, for the most part, it is pretty rubbery and inedible, but does keep the meat moist.

Next at 11:30am was Pork Ribs. Ribs are finicky. They can be easily over cooked or under cooked. Judges are advised, "When sampling a properly cooked contest rib the area of the meat where the bite is taken should be pulled cleanly from the bone with very little effort. The exposed bone of a well cooked rib will often dry immediately." This was good advice. It seems the biggest challenge in turning in good ribs (and any other BBQ for that matter)is timing. If turn-in is at 11:30 and your ribs have not cooked enough to be tender, tough luck. You still need to turn them in. A couple of the ribs I judged were not tender, and did not come off of the bone at the bite. Some of them were "fall off the bone" which is over cooked. I had one that was amazing.... A very good rib.

At Noon was pulled pork turn-in. Now I have smoked pork butt before, so I had a general idea if what to look for. Much of the entries were without any sauce, so in turn much of the meat tasted like plain pork. Pretty bland. Entries came with pulled pork and some bark (the tasty, dryer outer crust). Out of six entries, I really liked one. I think it was injected with marinade before cooking, the meat inside had a great flavor, sort of apple like.

By this time, I am nearly stuffed having tasted 18 samples of chicken, ribs and pork butt, but we still had brisket to go.

At 12:30pm, it was brisket turn in time. Now I have not smoked brisket myself, and am not even sure where you can buy it in around Stockton. I have tasted good brisket before and it is amazing. Of the 6 samples I had to judge, I wouldn't say any were outstanding. I just could not get one with really good flavor. Many were tender, but nothing knocked my socks off.

So after 24 tastes of BBQ I was finished and as full as I could be. I had tasted a lot of good meat, but what was surprising to me is that I tasted a good amount of not so good meat. I guess that is the down side of judging, not everyone makes good BBQ all of the time. I learned a lot about BBQ and the hard work that goes into cooking good meat.

The event allowed folks to try BBQ from many of the competitors. The BBQ was really popular. The trophies were awarded. Sad thing is, I don't know if I tasted or judged any of the winners. Bummer. Still can't wait until next year...
